IE button bug

I would like to report this Windows Internet Explorer bug to save other greif. Seems that IE 6 (well, version: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 to be specific) doesn’t handle the <button> tag very well, especially when it is of type submit.

I have a form that allows multiple actions to be preformed on the selected data. Each action has a button with a value and they all share the same name. Something like:

<button type="submit" value="send_email" name="act">Send email</button>
<button type="submit" value="delete" name="act">Delete</button>

This button works but the value that IE submits is always ‘Delete’ (note the capital!?). Seem that when a form has more than one button of type submit IE will always pass the value of last one on the form no matter which button is pressed. This is not the case for <input> buttons.

Guess this means it doesn’t fully support HTML 4, or is this a ‘feature’ not a bug?

Bombs again

Rode home today to find that my street had been blockade by the cops and they weren’t letting any one in. The 26 bus that had an attempted bombing goes right past my place. So tonight I’m at Jon and Neridas who live in Camden.

Poor Nerida had a horrible trip home from the city. The bus driver lost it when some people jumped in the back door and he turned off the bus, and then when he turned it on the let the people off he started revving it till people got scared. I guess the bus drivers are a bit stressed at the moment.

Nerida said she’s scared by the bombings. Jon seems indifferent. I’m reminded of the struggle that the rest of the world is going though again. It was very evident in East Timor, with the BBC beamed in via satellite reminding me of the rest of the worlds decadence.

Seems the third world is now making the decadence aware of it via the BBC.

Hello my dear friend Alexander !

Olga sitting

Hello my dear friend Alexander !
I am very glad that you have responded to my short message to you.
Really pleasantly that I have interested you.
As you know from my short letter my name is Olga!
I hope to you this name is pleasant.
I’m 28 years old!
I hope my age of you I do not confuse also to you approaches!
I was born in city under name Yaransk.
Probably you did not hear about this city because it is small city which is located in a southwest of the Kirov area!
It is about 850 kilometres from Moscow.
You may take a map of Russia and try to find my city.
It is located on the river Yaran so it will be easier to you find it.
My city small but very beautiful.
The beauty is created with set of greens and water.
I have received secondary education in this city.
After the ending 11 Classes at school number 3, I have left to act in Yoshkar-Ola in university and have successfully acted on economical faculty!
On a speciality I the manager!
After the successful ending of university I have come back home and has tried to find work on a speciality.
But as city at us small I can not find anything suitable on my speciality.
In a result I was employed in a shop by the seller where I work now.
The truth I dream of the best work but it is necessary to be content with that that is.
You probably know that in Russia a problem with workplaces.
I have slightly run forward and have overlooked to tell about my childhood.
At school I studied perfectly and all Spoke that I the gifted child.
I was very quick child and inquisitive.
When I went to school I went to dance school and I engaged in dances.
And now I am still engaged in them, in the days off I go in dance school.
Except for that I actively went in for sports.
When I have free time I go to the training hall.
In the winter I loved a ski and skates.
And in the summer I like to swim in the river.
In university I to be engaged began professionally navigation and volleyball.
The first at me turned out better.
I have many diplomas and letters on navigation.
But all of them now lay in a case.
You are interested probably by that why I have addressed to the Internet to find the partner in life?
Simply strangely enough it sounds but I could not grow fond of the person in Russia!
I had many partners but with anybody at me has failed to get serious relations.
I have girlfriend which too has found the love in the Internet and she has advised me to try.
And it at me the first experience and I hope that all to turn out I always I hope for the best.
We shall look that will be farther.
And why you search for the girl in the Internet?
Do you like Russian girls and why?
Did you have serious relations earlier?
Probably you were married?
Do you have children?
And in general as you concern to children?
I very much love children.
In future I’ll want have 2 children: boy and girl.
Though my dream to work at the big company.
As you probably interests on my intentions how many are serious?
And that I want further?
I in general very serious person also do not joke with such things as love a marriage and so forth.
I am going to construct serious relations and it is possible to leave for the husband further!

Probably she still exists in our world where so much bad.
And if she is that I necessarily her Finde.
Who knows probably we with you we shall go far in our relations.
Who knows probably you and there is my prince on a white horse.
Now I want to learn what your intentions and that you want from relations?
Do you want a marriage?
Do you want family and children?, or you search simply friendship?
What the marriage means for you?
For me the marriage is the most important and serious step in life and he needs to be made safely and is considered.
Many people concern not seriously to this and as a result get divorced. I do not want to make such mistakes.
Now I live with my mum which call Nadezhda or am simple Nadya!
She works as the cook at school where I studied.
She perfectly is going and has learned me to make masterpieces of cookery.
Daddy at me is not present and there was no he has thrown my mum when she was pregnant.
And my mum forbids to me to speak about him.
As you can see it was necessary she to my mums is not sweet also does not want that with me has taken place as.
Somehow at us conversation was and she has told that even if to me will come she will not leave her against if only I was in reliable and loving hands.
On this note I want to finish this letter to you.
Sincerely I hope that you will answer and that I have liked you.
It will be pleasant for me to continue with you correspondence!
Yours faithfully Olga from Russia!

Unshaken

Fortunately none of my friends were harmed in the bombings. The reaction here is strangely subdued, and life seems to be caring on here with little difference. At first I was shocked at the indifference but now I am beginning to realize there is still a type of maturity left over from the second world war and perhaps the IRA bombings that lets them move on unshaken. I think because Australia has never experienced direct contact with conflict it seems shocking to us to be near events like this. I know I felt strange when I passed Liverpool Street station yesterday and saw the flowers heaped in front of the closed tube station doors.

There is a maturity in character in Europeans that Australians don’t seem to have. Centuries of building and destroying each other perhaps. It seems to bring them a sense of certainty and ease of nature. I guess I have always felt closer to Asia and its ancient traditions, having grown up amongst that, and there too is a deep continuum that modern events can’t alter. I feel by understanding and relating to this I gain a sense of certainty in my own character and I begin to understand who I am, or want to be at the very least. It seems to have taken a long time getting here.

Blog to log

Just sniffing around I can across:

  1. Reblog, filter and republish other peoples feeds on your own site. “Useful to individuals who want to maintain a weblog but prefer curating content to writing original posts”. This is a poor way of describing a Planet or Portal, but with more editorial control.
  2. TagCloud extracts keywords from a set of given RSS feeds and builds a ‘tag cloud’ (or a ‘keyword cloud’ technically).

Rise of the editor

Beyond the self publishing revolution to the rise of the editor: as more content comes online good editorial will be needed to sift though it. This role will become more and more important and sites like Slashdot might be knocked off the top of the ‘most read geek portal’ list.

I envisaged sites like Vibewire being a collection of blogs, ether hosted by them or where ever, that feed into the individual channels and the editors simply selecting from what is already published on these blogs. These channels in turn would feed into the main page.

Reblog gives anyone the power to be their own Slashdot or Vibewire.

Update: Looks like someone already has.

RSS needs Tags

TagCloud illustrates one of the main problems with RSS, and that is that it provides raw information without any means to contextualise it. With the recent rise of tags or Folksonomy (I that that word) feeds need to be extended to allow for keywords/tags to be provided with the feed. Then tools to map theses remote taxonomy’s to local ones would be needed but would provide a means to manage the large volumes of information effectively.

Update:
Seem someone is trying to put a name on this problem: Feed Overload Syndrome, and its solution ‘Meta-Feeds’ (I guess everyone is trying to be the first to name the next big fad). But lets break Mr Burnham down a bit:

Burnham reckons tagging is no good because it makes tag soap as every one has their own tags, which is OK and that’s what so called ‘folksonomy’ are about. Individually they are worth little but on mass these little bits add up to more than the expert made taxonomies which are worth a lot (if you know how to use them). The goal however is to map from whatever incoming taxonomy a local personal one which will ultimately have more meaning to the viewer (the advantage of folksonomys).

Burnhams solutions breaks down to what Reblog is doing:

…the posts are categorized and placed into a taxonomy using advanced statistical processes such as Bayesian analysis and natural language processing

So basically machine keyword scraping and the mythical ‘natural language processing’ (oh for a computer that can understand!). This is never going to be as valuable to the end user as human tagging and won’t map perfectly to an expert taxonomy. What we really want is some sort of collaborative filtering process that maps from one folksonomy/taxonomy to another based on trust networks that the end user subscribes to. As a result of this Peer to Peer Social Networking looks promising and more like a realistic solution, or even some sort of Google ranking based on community and author.

Burnham did get one thing right however, this mapping process will have to be external to the actual feeds, ether with a smart feedreader client that talks to a service/community to do the mapping.

Amateur media

I remember I had a long and ugly debate with Bernard and Sara one night over a couple of bottles of wine. I proposed that with the advent of cheap media devices, and internet community sharing sites, we would not have to rely on the commercial main stream media completely anymore for information on current events. As the media becomes more restricted by the powers that be independent amateur media might be the way forward for democracy.

Examples from the recident London bombing:

  1. The London Bomb Blast Pool
  2. Wikipedias ‘7 July 2005 London bombings‘ entry was up to the minute
  3. London Explosions @ Londonist

Update: Seems I’m not the only one thinking this way.

Multiple blasts paralyse London

Bit scary here at the moment
. The facts seem to be:

  1. 08:49 police called to Liverpool Street tube station after reports of a bang
  2. Blasts also reported at Aldgate East, Edgware Rd, Kings Cross, Moorgate, Russell Square tube stations
  3. 10:14 Reports of blast on bus at Tavistock Square

London bus destroyed by bomb blast

I dropped a friend off at Aldgate East last night and walked passed Liverpool Street just before. The cops dropped by the office, which is near queens park) and said to keep away from the windows and not leave the building.

I ride to work every day now, even though its cold and wet today. I don’t thnk I will be catching the bus or tube for a long time if I can help it. Gess more people might start riding.

Very weird to be in a city targeted for terrorist attack. With the G8 meeting happening in Scotland at the same time and all the shit Bush is saying about ‘pre-Kyoto era’.

Yesterday the olympics, today fear and lothing.

A turbulent day, inside and out.
