So I just discovered that Leopard comes with a version of Ruby on Rails (RoR) pre-installed. The only problem is its a bit dated but there is a command-line one-liner to update it all no sweat with RubyGem (the Ruby package manager):
of course you can also get RubyGem to update itself too:
I love systems that keep themselves up-to-date.
Then to get going, get back to the command-line and create the project somewhere with mysql support:
rails -d mysql ~/Sites/myNewApp
And it should generate the basic RoR site layout. To test it, run the build in web server:
cd ~/Sites/myNewApp
ruby scripts/server
And then point your favourite web browser at http://127.0.0.1:3000/ and your away!
I’ve just started to learn Pythons answer to the MVC framework race: Django, but I’m lazy and when I came across this info this morning and how easy it was to get RoR up and running on Leopard I was suckered in. I guess I’ll learn both and compare the two at some point.

Bohème Sauvage is THE 1920s Burlesque Party of Berlin. This is there 7th party. I went to the last one and it was very well done. Quite a unique atmosphere. STRICT dress code! I will be there this Saturday after a day of moving and painting.

Last night I saw a movie that revolted me so much I could not watch anymore: Pink Flamingos (1972). I can’t remember when a movie had pulled such utter revolt from me to the point I was almost throwing up.
However, it has in a way inspired the Urban Uncle project and given it a style, ‘Trash’, which brings its own freedoms to create. All are encouraged to go out and film their own trashy dreams and ideas. This is what I believe the Punk or New Wave movement was about the “Just do it” attitude. But I digress…

Thanks to Seb for this recipe. He showed me how to do this one in London in 2005 and recommends doubling (or tripling) the proportion of herbs (and adding chilli powder I imagine). I’m not sure where this was originally taken from (Seb?). Masur Dal means ‘red lentils’ and are the basic lentils apparently.
1 cup red lentils
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cumin powder
2 potatoes, chopped
4 tomatoes, chopped
1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves
4 green chillies (optional)
2 tablespoons ghee
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 teaspoon garam masala
Wash the dal, soak, drain and boil in 5 cups water, adding turmeric, salt and cumin together with the potatoes and tomatoes. When the potatoes are cooked, add the coriander leaves and green chillies. Heat ghee and fry garlic and onion till golden. Stir in the garam masala and fry for two minutes. Add to the dal, mix well and serve hot with rice.

OpenLaszlo is mind blowing! If you don’t believe me check their demo Flash Flickr browser AND THEN check their identical DHTML Flickr browser compiled from the same code or XML as it were.
As if that wasn’t impressive enough, the concept of zero-install, or no-install, stand alone web applications (I prefer widgets) is quite a unique idea and makes it Oh-so-easy to integrate into whatever you need it for like a blog, community portal, forum, static HTML page etc.
The final clincher for me is that its Open Source. Flapping their floppies at the big boys, YEAH! We (I) here at TMI like it and award it the ‘Sh!tHot!‘ stamp of approval, look for it all good websites.
And while we’re on the Dojo subject, why not draw a picture AND THEN playback the creation process in real time! This ones just Hot!

Went to this gig at Station Park last night. Was a bit of a fizzer, as far as Berlin gigs go. It was 9 Euro which is a bit pricey for most students here and there are plenty of other things happening on a Friday night in Berliner town. Otherwise there was a lot of potential as the live acts they lined up were quite good.
